If you feel this is an option for you, you can get a list of approved sperm donation banks from your doctor, or online. Once you get a list, make sure the bank is state-approved and compare the facilities: what they require, what they pay. Some donation centers will give you pertinent information about their bank over the phone, while others require an in-office visit.

Be sure that you have a collective family history on hand so that when the center screens you and your family for medical abnormalities, you are able to give them as much information as possible. It is probable that lack of information will eliminate you as a candidate. You will also be required to pass a medical screening test and give blood for analysis.

Read your contract with the bank carefully. This contract will lay the foundation of what is required of you as a donor and your compensation for being one. Sperm donors are not responsible for any children as a result of pregnancy and don’t have any connection to the person receiving the donation. If you cannot meet the terms of the contract, try another collection center.

If you are selected as a candidate, the donation bank will require you to leave a sperm sample which will be tested for various things, including how well the sperm freezes, deformities, count and mobility. More specimens may be required, at the donation center’s discretion.

A couple tips before starting:

1. Be sure that you at least have a high school diploma before testing, as the donation centers are looking for average males with schooling.
2. Do not ejaculate three days prior to donation. This will ensure a better sperm count result.
3. If at any time you are rejected as a donor, try another bank. This does not mean that you are completely unsuitable or cannot procreate. There are many reasons banks turn candidates down.

As far as the money to be made, it is a question to leave to the sperm bank. Some banks pay up to $100 per donation, others pay more; others pay less. In any case, this is something you may want to research before donating. You may also ask if you get paid up front, or after donation. Some centers pay more if you provide them with baby pictures and photos of you as an adult. Again, this should be reviewed in your contract.

Dr. Nega received his Ph.D, from The New School for Social Research in 1991. He is a leading member of the CUD, Ethiopia’s main opposition party. He is Mayor of Addis Ababa, has served as president of the Ethiopian Economic Association, founded the Ethiopian Economic Policy Research Institute, and served as a consultant for the UN Economic Commission for Africa.

He is part of a group trying to bring democracy to his country. We are trying to help him do just that by becoming free again.
